Javier Cañon Ferreras - Selección Genómica: Mitos y Realidad
Emeritus Professor at the Department of Animal Production, Veterinary Faculty, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). His main research activities have focused on conservation and genetic improvement programs applied to livestock, mainly cattle breeds. He is the Scientific Director of the Genetic Laboratory established in 1995, which supports the research group and is recognized as a Qualified Center of Genetics by the Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación for managing genetic conservation and genetic improvement programs for local cattle breeds. From that moment on, the laboratory's activities have focused on the search for and use of molecular information for various applications in animal production, such as identifying genes of interest in animal genetics, genetic diversity, traceability, and the assignment of anonymous samples. These research activities have received significant economic support from competitive projects, including regional, national, and European calls. He co-founded the spin-off VELOGEN, SL., in 2014, in which UCM has a stake. He has collaborated on eight European projects and 22 national competitive projects, including 11 funded by the Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología (CICYT) or the Plan Nacional, as well as 11 regional competitive projects. He has participated in 64 agreements with 30 different public and private entities. He is a member of UCM's research group "Animal Nutrigenomics," which was recently evaluated as excellent by the Spanish Research State Agency (AEI). He is also the co-author of two patents (WO 2006/040376 and ES-2497291).
